Which memberships Should VOJ Tech join?

04/10/2023

As a graduate of masters in Environmental Law and Practice and bachelors in Environmental science, I could pretend that I have all it needs to provide services and consultations to the interested parties. I also have about two years of experience of providing water quality tests to private water supplies in the Czech Republic, which could solidify my hubris. The trouble is, if I am to restart my freelance services, I want to provide quality freelance services. I want to provide value to my clients, which they deserve for choosing me over the competition.

This explains the reasons why I will be subscribing to some of the latter bodies. At the very least, it provides a possibility to scan the competition, so I can make sure that my service will be unique enough. At best there might be some valuable lessons to take away, on which my potential customers would be losing.

National Association of Licensed Paralegals

NALP is one of the bodies I will be joining. In this case, it won't be as much to scan the competition as I believe my service is niche enough. This association provides standards on how paralegal consulting should be conducted. I have a legal masters, so I will definitely join. Upon checking on the phone, I have learnt that as long as I did not do a bachelor of legal discipline (or Level 4 diploma accredited by them), I can join with a rank of affiliate member. They also offer a deal on this membership, if I start a level 3 award programme with them. This would be highly beneficial for the service, as legal advice on a case by case basis should be provided with the NALP standard in mind.

British Society of Soil Science

BSSS offers a membership range which seems to recognise my qualifications. They offer an early career membership and upon me checking this on the phone I should be accepted. This society gathers soil scientists and professionals, which gives me confidence that there could be a further benefit to network and gather valuable info for a future service which could be analysis of the soil and potential contaminants. If it proves to be beneficial, then I would be aiming to achieve full membership status in the long run.

Water Management Society

WMS provides a range of courses and memberships, which are industrially oriented. Their main focus is on controlling Legionella bacteria  and managing the risks. These organisms do not really live outside of the temperature range of 20-60 °C, so the main aim is to avoid long-term storage of water in this state. In case this sort of water is accidentally sprayed, this bacteria may cause legionnairres disease, which could develop to a fatal pneumonia. Since the inception of my services will be aimed at domestic households, it is not the most acute issue for my potential clients. The subscription as an associate would provide me with a chance to self-educate and network in this field.
